Jutro kartkówka!

40-year-old smart, sexy, witty mother/wife/human being extraordinaire, czyli ja: Lizzie! You have a kartkówka tomorrow.

Lizzie, 3rd grader extraordinaire: What!? Karkówka for dinner tomorrow?

Ja: No, not karkówka (pork neck), karT-kówka. I’m checking your Librus (e-grade book) and it says that you have a kartkówka tomorrow. (stern look from mother)

Lizzie: Ooooh myyyy gaaaawd!!!! (long pause) What’s a kartkówka?

Ja: It’s a quiz.

Lizzie: Ooooh myyyy gaaaawd!!!! (long pause) What’s a quiz?

Ja: It’s like a small test. It comes from the word “kartka”.

Lizzie: Ooooh myyyy gaaaawd!!!! (long pause) A quiz on what?

Ja: I don’t know. It doesn’t say. I thought you’d know.

Lizzie: No idea. Oh well.

Hahaha! In my old school, the math teacher called them "smerfówka", as in " smerfuj się kto może, wyciągamy karteczki!!!"

Hi Chris,
I am Polish and moved to Usa. I'm 40, (sexy, smart like you, he, he), wife, mom of two.
I'm in the process of reading your blog. I found it soooooo interesting and funny and true.
For so many years I've read only about and from Polish moved here (USA). Reading your blog is great and such a big change in my perspective. I need it. Thank you:))
Kartkówka was always the easy one. Sprawdzian was the important one. So, who cares about kartkówka???

Kat - So that explains the memes I found with kartkowki and smurfs. Now I get it!

Izabela - I totally get it because I love reading Polish blogs about the US (in Polish because then they are more honest - for sure no Amerykanki can read it). You are very welcome.

I did not realize that sprawdzian was "more equal" than kartkowka. I thought they were synonymous. The day after the kartkowka I asked Lizzie if they had had a quiz. She answered no so I re-checked the Librus. It turns out that they had a quiz in English which she didn't even notice. I hope she gets a 6 ;)

Hi Chris, I was in school more than 20 years ago. So, kartkówka and sprawdzian were not synonymous THAT time. Right now, after all changes who knows....
She gets 6, why not?

So despite the fact that my daughter was given advance notice for that kartkowka and I am sure she wrote it (I checked Librus again, she got a 6) she has no memory of any such thing. Kids!

--> czarownica,
