Orchard Festival

As it turns out we missed the Harvest Festival (Dożynki) last week because we were visiting a friend. We go to Dożynki every year, so we could stand to skip it this year. What we could not skip was a visit to Bolesławiec on the way to our friends. We have just about everything you can buy from the Polish pottery Mecca, but I did find a few things our collection was missing.

They have a whole basket, if anyone is interested.

We started our Orchard Festival Sunday with a bike ride. I've just returned to cycling after years, so the plan is to build up my distance each week. Because we go on bike paths through the forest, we get a whole body workout - or at least that's how it feels this morning. I could definitely see the signs of autumn on our ride. The morning breeze was crisp, and some leaves have already fallen.

After that we headed off by car to the festival. We started from a musical performance by the local school kids. Na Straganie is really funny when each vegetable is acted out by another kid.

Then we hit the stands to buy some apples and grab something to eat. There were so many people buying fruit I couldn't even get a picture.

Autumn is everywhere even at home.

I love autumn in Poland so be prepared for more unnecessary and repetitive autumn posts.

Śliczne to wszystko, a taki chlebek ze smalczykiem i ogórkiem kiszonym, mniam mniam. U nas też można kupić i ogórki i smalczyk, chlebek piekę sama, ale to jednak nie tak samo jak w Polsce.

I am not a big fan of lard, but I did buy a whole loaf of that bread. It was still hot from the oven and cost just 12 zloty. It was a total bitwa na chleb - long line, line jumpers. My girls took huge sandwiches to school and are now considered cool with the other kids.

Hey, I'm probably doing this all wrong, but I'm a person who's seriously considering doing what you did--moving to Poland, teaching English. Even *I* think I sound crazy but the idea won't die so I was wondering, with your experience, can you tell me why it's a bad idea? Or why it's a good idea. Either one. (Sorry for such a sudden random question.)

Shannon - Send me an email in the contact me form at the top of the home page and we can discuss it. Hope to hear from you soon.

Now I have to make my own smalec. Good thing I have pork belly home, the rest is easy:)

Star- Do you add any extras? My mother-in-law had a couple of different recipes with bacon, onions, apples, prunes - all kinds of good stuff.

I want that skull... I have to go to Bolesławiec sometime but it's so far from Gliwice! One day... and I will buy everything.

Yes, it's a couple of hours away from Gliwice but well worth it. You should see the other Americans that go there on the bus all the way from the military base in Germany. They are so giddy when they arrive. I don't know if it's because of the pottery or because they're so happy to be out of the bus. Is it wrong that I still have my Boleslawiec jack o' lantern displayed...next to my Boleslawiec Christmas tree?
